It’s the 7th day in a row with a heat warning in Jacksonville. But a “cold front” is on the way (it will still be HOT)

JACKSONVILLE, Florida. – People talk about the weather everywhere, sometimes wiping the sweat from their brows. It really has been a hot, hot summer and we talk about it every day.

On Wednesday, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a heat advisory for Jacksonville for the seventh day in a row. This means that the perceived temperature will be above 106 degrees Fahrenheit (41 degrees Celsius). The NWS defines the heat index as the temperature that feels to the human body when the relative humidity is combined with the air temperature.

“The preliminary peak heat index at JAX International Airport for Tuesday, 8/13 was 108°F, which tied the all-time record of 33 days with a peak heat index (above/equal to) 108°F set in 1981. Additionally, this was the 67th day with a peak heat index of (above/equal to) 100°F this summer, which is already above the average summer total of 64 days,” said Jason Hess, meteorologist with NWS Jacksonville.

Even though the heat warnings will end after Wednesday, that doesn’t mean the heat will subside anytime soon. Over the next few days and into the weekend, we will continue to have perceived temperatures between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius, even if both temperatures and rain drop.

Meanwhile, the number of days with heat warnings this summer is not the only story.

“So far this summer (June 1 to August 13) the average temperature at JAX International Airport was 28.4°C (+2.0°F above normal), making it the highest temperature ever recorded (since 1971) along with 1981,” said Hess.

You may have noticed that it is hot and humid when you walk the dog in the morning or go to work. Well, it’s true, our temperatures are warmer at night too.

“Even more impressive is the average minimum temperature of 74.2°F (+1.7°F above normal), which is a full degree higher than the highest ever recorded at the international airport site and is likely due to the more humid air mass that is there during most of the summer months,” Hess said.

A cold front is heading our way over the next few days, bringing cooler temperatures (highs of just under 30 degrees are expected for Thursday and Friday) and little to no rain for the rest of the week and into the weekend.

After weeks of rain, including Tropical Storm Debby, this will be a welcome change for most.
