3 dead and 6 injured after accident involving stolen Kia Soul with 7 passengers

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KCTV/Gray News) – Three people died and several were seriously injured when a 16-year-old driver crashed a stolen Kia Soul with eight passengers inside, Missouri police said.

Kansas City police are investigating a two-car crash that occurred Tuesday night at the corner of East 35th Street and Norton Avenue.

According to police, it all started when a police officer stopped the blue Kia Soul for a traffic violation. When the officer got out of his vehicle, the Kia sped away.

Police said the officer did not pursue the Kia, but noticed that the car’s license plates indicated it was stolen.

As the Kia sped away from the traffic stop, it approached a white Chevrolet Tahoe traveling in the same direction east on 35th Street.

As the Chevrolet slowed to turn left onto Norton Avenue northbound, the Kia crossed into oncoming westbound traffic to pass it.

As the Chevrolet turned left, it was struck by the Kia, causing the Chevrolet to spin out and come to a stop southbound on Norton Avenue.

The Kia crashed into a large power pole and overturned on its roof. The car had eight passengers:

  • A 16-year-old male driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
  • A 37-year-old male passenger was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
  • A passenger, whose age was not given, was pronounced dead in hospital.
  • A 20-year-old male passenger suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
  • A 4-year-old sitting on the 20-year-old’s lap suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.
  • A 6-year-old passenger in the middle seat suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
  • A 12-year-old in the cargo hold suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.
  • A 13-year-old in the cargo hold suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The Chevrolet driver was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
