World Photography Day and gorilla research and conservation – a perfect match

World Photography Day and gorilla research and conservation – a perfect match

Photography plays an important role in many areas of research and conservation, and here at the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund it is one of the tools we use every day.

Photographs are a crucial part of identifying mountain gorillas because of their unique nose prints. Our field teams photograph each gorilla and their nose prints are added to our long-term database. We also use photographs to estimate the size of gorillas – a technique called photogrammetry – which provides fascinating insights into how gorillas grow and the relationship between size and social status and reproductive success. We also have motion-activated cameras in the forest to help us monitor gorillas and document the other species that live with them in the forest.

In addition, we use photography to highlight the importance of gorillas and inspire people around the world to get involved in gorilla conservation efforts. Photography really plays a crucial role in showing how wonderful these animals are!

We’re excited to celebrate World Photography Day on August 19 – a day to celebrate all things photography and share some of our favorite photos of the year and the stories behind them. Check out these amazing moments featuring our favorite animals on the planet and some members of neighboring species:
