Match of the Day celebrates its 60th anniversary

Match of the Day celebrates its 60th anniversary

With the start of the Premier League this weekend, the leading football show celebrates its 60th anniversary.

Presenter Gary Lineker is also celebrating a very special anniversary: he has been presenting the most famous football show in the world for 25 years since 1999.

With 33 million viewers last season across the Premier League and FA Cup, Match of the Day remains a staple for football fans, who still get a kick out of hearing the iconic theme song on Saturday nights.

The show is constantly evolving to meet changing viewing habits and offers unique and unmatched analysis and commentary across all platforms.

Whether live or increasingly on iPlayer, audiences watch all the action for free on TV and across BBC Sport’s digital platforms. Last season, there were over 150 million views of MOTD clips across social media and the BBC Sport website, as well as spin-off shows such as MOTD Top-10.

Match of the Day’s 60th year will be celebrated across the BBC, including an interactive timeline created by BBC History celebrating the show’s key milestones. A specially curated documentary, MOTD@60, will dive deep into the archive and all the historic moments, showing how the changes over the years have made MOTD what it is today. It will air on BBC One on Monday 26 August at 10.30pm and will also be available on iPlayer.

Next week, The One Show takes a look behind the scenes at how the legendary show is put together live every Saturday, from deciding the order to making match changes.
