The Life Is a Carnival: Last Waltz Tour ’24 kicks off in October at the Warfield in San Francisco, just over a mile from the location of the original Last Waltz Concert that took place on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1976, at the Winterland Ballroom. Other major stops include New York City, Denver, Boston and Philadelphia before the shows end in Toronto, where Robertson was born in July 1943.

Executive producer of the tour launch concert in Los Angeles is Robertson’s long-time friend and collaborator Martin Scorsese, the director of The last waltzRobertson died on August 9, 2023 at the age of 80 after a battle with cancer. He had just finished working on the soundtrack to Scorsese’s Killer of the Flower Moonwhich was later nominated for 10 Oscars – including for best original score.

Highlights from previous “Last Waltz” tours

The organizer Blackbirds Presents has a number of current Last Waltz-themed tours with Johnson, Was, Higgins, Medeski, Malone and guests such as Michael McDonald, Warren Haynes and Dr. John. Garth Hudson, the only surviving band member, performed on the 2016 dates.

Co-founder Keith Wortman calls these new dates a high point. “This band, consisting of these artists, playing these songs, is what Don (Was) and I dreamed of when we started planning this tour,” Wortman said in an official statement. “Now the dream has become a reality.”

Campbell and Tench, both former members of Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers, will also perform at the first LA concert. Their most memorable reunion came in 2023 as part of Bob Dylan’s backing band at Farm Aid.
