Fallout: New Vegas director says he would direct a new Fallout game if given creative freedom

Fallout: New Vegas director Josh Sawyer has said he would work on a new Fallout title as long as certain creative criteria are met.

In the second part of his recent question-and-answer series on his YouTube channel, the Pentiment director said he would be happy to return to Fallout, depending on the level of creative freedom he was granted.

“Every project is about what we do, where are the boundaries, what can I do and what can’t I do?” Sawyer said when asked by a fan about his return to the series.

“With any intellectual property, especially one I’ve worked with before, I ask myself: What do I want to do this time that I couldn’t do last time?

“If these limitations are really limiting, then it’s not attractive, because who wants to work on something where what they want to research is not possible?”

Excitement for more Fallout titles from the team behind New Vegas has been growing for years. Last year, original Fallout co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky expressed their excitement for a possible remaster of Fallout New Vegas.

The longtime partners, who most recently co-directed Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds, told The Gamer they would be delighted to remake the studio’s 2010 Fallout game.

“Not that it’s my decision, but wouldn’t a graphical remake of Fallout New Vegas be great?” Cain said in the interview. “It would be great,” Boyarsky agreed.

In 2022, it was claimed that very early talks had already taken place about a possible sequel to Fallout New Vegas, with Obsidian and Bethesda owner Microsoft reportedly expressing strong interest in making it happen.

Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart also recently said he would like to work on another Fallout game if given the chance.
