Did Machine Gun Kelly have one of the worst first pitches ever against the Cubs?

There are many memorable ceremonial first pitches in MLB history, especially when it comes to celebrities who wanted to do it “their way.”

Machine Gun Kelly followed in the footsteps of others on Tuesday night when he was given the okay to throw out the first pitch for the Cleveland Guardians against the Chicago Cubs.

Instead of trying to throw the ball down the middle to Onion, the Guardian’s mascot, he ran off the mound and threw it into the crowd.

Maybe it’s the old, grumpy baseball fan in me, but ceremonial first pitches are meant to be… well, ceremonial. And special. They usually represent something more important than the team or the person themselves.

And that’s why it’s OK to let the ball bounce once or twice before it reaches the catcher, or even miss the batter’s box altogether. But intentionally throwing the ball into the stands is a waste of time.

Maybe it was choreographed and expected. Maybe that’s just how it works in Cleveland, Ohio.

Ultimately, whether or not one finds this ceremonial first pitch acceptable is a matter of interpretation. I’m sticking with the celebrities who (accidentally) make fools of themselves, or a community leader who gets the once-in-a-lifetime honor of receiving special recognition in front of his favorite team and city.

As for Machine Gun Kelly, I think I’ll leave the ball exactly where it landed: in the stands.
