HALF-YEAR REPORT: Alpine – Another turbulent year, but are the building blocks for stability finally in place?

HALF-YEAR REPORT: Alpine – Another turbulent year, but are the building blocks for stability finally in place?

Best moment

While Alpine’s best moments have been far harder to match (remember they finished on the podium in this category in Monaco in last year’s half-year report), their performance at the Spanish Grand Prix sits comfortably at the top thanks to Gasly’s P9 and Ocon’s P10, which secured them a double points finish.

This coupled with their best performance in qualifying (Gasly: P7, Ocon: P9) and also a double points finish in Canada, all of which really gave you the feeling that Alpine were back to regularly fighting in the top 10 and that the hard work was paying off. It would have been a major morale boost for everyone.

Worst moment

Unfortunately, there are a few candidates for this category. The clash between Ocon and Gasly in Monaco – and the subsequent arguments – did not reflect well on the collaboration between the two behind the scenes, and the turmoil regarding key personnel continued.

But now let’s turn the clock back to the beginning of the year and the Bahrain Grand Prix, when the extent of Alpine’s problems on track were fully revealed as the team qualified last and second to last.

While both Gasly and Ocon were dejected, they admitted they were not surprised by the qualifying result, having declared they had been “on the back foot” following pre-season testing. Things hardly improved in the race either, with Ocon and Gasly only finishing P17 and P18 respectively.

This weekend was a sign to everyone that 2024 would be anything but a walk in the park for the Enstone team.
