Johnstown man sentenced to life without parole for killing his wife and burying her on the way

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) – A Johnstown man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for killing his wife in 2018.

Brian Giles was found guilty by a jury in June of killing his wife Nancy and burying her body in a shallow grave on a hiking trail in Johnstown.

Giles was arrested and charged with murder in May 2022 after a three-and-a-half-year investigation into his wife’s disappearance and death.

In a meeting with 6 News before his trial, Giles protested his innocence, a position he maintained on Tuesday at the sentencing hearing.

During the sentencing, Giles continually interrupted the judge and was eventually escorted out of the courtroom by sheriff’s deputies. As he was led out, Giles verbally abused the prosecutors and several others in the courtroom.

Nancy’s mother told 6News that this was a “happy day for Nancy.”

Cambria County District Attorney Greg Neugebauer said he expects appeals in the case, but the defense declined to comment on the matter.

The day after Giles’s verdict was announced, Johnstown police and firefighters were spotted outside Giles’ former residence on Franklin Street in the Kernville neighborhood. A woman’s body was found inside the house.

Eventually, the body was identified as his ex-girlfriend Jilly Todaro. She disappeared in December 2020.

No charges were filed in her death.
