Daughters (Natalie Rae, Angela Patton, 2024), Netflix
Natalie Rae and Angela Patton’s documentary is an inspirational story but also a little heartbreaking. It follows Patton’s own Date With Dad program in the US, which allows incarcerated fathers to attend a prison dance with their young daughters. We follow the preparations for an event in Washington DC from the perspective of Aubrey, five, Santana, ten, Ja’Ana, eleven, and Raziah, 15. Their convicted fathers must complete a ten-week course that delves deeply into their past and responsibilities as parents. It’s tough love, but 95% of the men who take part do not reoffend. The outcomes for the girls are more mixed, but it’s remarkable how a day together can change lives. Simon Wardell
