16-year-old boy from Kent pleads not guilty after fatal high-speed crash

A 16-year-old boy from Kent has pleaded not guilty to seven charges after he drove a stolen car at 103mph into another car on July 13, killing the driver.

Atreyu Renard Batts entered his guilty plea on Monday, August 12, at the King County Courthouse in Seattle, according to the King County District Attorney’s Office. He is being held at the Clark Children and Family Justice Center in Seattle, with bail set at $500,000. His next court hearing is scheduled for September 5.

Prosecutors charged Batts with second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, hit-and-run, two counts of assault, attempted eluding and possession of a stolen vehicle. He is being charged as an adult, which is allowed under state law when a juvenile commits a crime at age 16 or 17.

According to the July 30 indictment filed by the King County District Attorney’s Office, Batts allegedly fled from Kent police in a 2015 Hyundai Saonta and then struck and killed Alizar A. Kachiyev, 41, of Auburn, the driver of the struck vehicle.

Prosecutors explained in court documents that the murder charge stems from the death of a person while committing the crime of escaping a police vehicle. The involuntary manslaughter charge relates to the death of Kachiyev. The hit-and-run charge relates to the alleged escape on foot from the vehicle after the accident. The two assault charges relate to injuries sustained by two passengers in the stolen vehicle, ages 15 and 14.

After Kent police identified Batts as the driver, detectives found him in the King County Juvenile Detention Center just six days later, according to the indictment. He is accused of stealing a car with seven other juveniles in the car.

The owner of the stolen Sonata called 911 at about 11:55 p.m. on July 12 to report finding her stolen vehicle in the area of 23000 100th Avenue SE, according to charging documents. Officers found the vehicle at about 12:05 a.m. on July 13 and began a pursuit when the driver accelerated after turning on his hazard lights.

In the 26000 block of 104th Avenue SE, a driver attempted to turn left from a westbound driveway onto northbound 104th Avenue SE, charging documents state. The stolen vehicle collided with the left rear of that vehicle, causing the rear of the car to be torn off at approximately 12:08 a.m. The driver, Kachiyev, later died from his injuries.

A download of the vehicle’s airbag control module showed the vehicle was traveling 99 mph with 99% throttle 5 seconds before impact and 103 mph at the time of impact, charging documents state. The vehicle’s ignition was completely disassembled, allowing the vehicle to be started without a key.

Eight days after the fatal crash, Batts’ parents called 911 to report that they believed their son had been involved in the accident, charging documents state.
