NYT “Connections” August 14: Answers and clues for game #430

If you want to avoid your Connections winning streak, Newsweek is here to help.

The New York Times bought Wordle in January 2022 for a low seven-figure sum after his popularity exploded in the English-speaking world.

The following year, presumably to capitalize on this success, the newspaper launched ConnectionsThe new game has already proved popular and gained a loyal following. It has quickly become the newspaper’s second most played game, after Wordle.

How to play “Connections”

Connections Players must group 16 words into four categories by association. For example, Tuesday’s game linked the words “label,” “handle,” “nickname,” and “epithet” in the “nicknames” category.

Each category is named after a color, which also indicates the level of difficulty. Yellow is the easiest category, followed by green, then blue and purple. If a player guesses incorrect word groups four times, the game ends and they are defeated. There is no time limit to the game.

The player can shuffle the board at any time so that the 16 words are randomly rearranged.

If you have difficulty recognizing a connection between some words, Connections Editor Wyna Liu suggests trying to solve a different category first to narrow down the selection.

“This could take one of those extra cards out of the running, or at least remove some cards from the board so other categories are easier to identify,” she said.

This approach also helps avoid the so-called “article overlap”, where one word can fit into several categories – a trick Connections is used to test players. You can also press the Shuffle button, which shuffles the board and sometimes makes the connection between words more obvious.

Liu also said Newsweek that players should “wait as long as possible” before guessing because “the four attempts go by extremely quickly.”

“Don’t do what I do, which is ‘solve problems out of anger,'” she said in June.
