Report: Customer discovers potential privacy issue in T Life app that sends data every 5 seconds

T-Mobile’s T Life app recently came under the spotlight because users found it redundant. Since it had many similarities with the T-Mobile app, many hoped to simply delete it. However, as T-Mobile announced, it would soon replace the T-Mobile app, so users have agreed to keep both apps for now.

Recently, however, a user discovered that the T Life app was trying to send information from his phone every five seconds. As shared by TelephoneArenaThe user had the Pi-hole ad blocker installed on his device, which allowed him to opt out of a request to share his data. Upon closer inspection, he noticed that T-Mobile’s new app was attempting to send data to a website called “smetrics.t-mobile.com” every five seconds.

While the user concluded that “It could be nothing, or it could be something,” He uninstalled the app as he didn’t use it that often. He only used the app to pay his account every month, but due to a potential privacy risk, he decided to pay his bill through the website instead.

In addition to the risk of obtaining customer information, the user stated that this action could drain his battery, the same concern that other users had already expressed in July.

While we have yet to receive an answer from T-Mobile as to why the app needs to send data every five seconds, one user remained optimistic about the situation:

“Previously, the T-Mobile Tuesday app would send back information about your cellular connection for diagnostic and troubleshooting purposes… It looks like this app is likely doing the same thing.”

This explanation is consistent with the diagnostic data published on T-Mobile’s website. But why does this have to happen every five seconds? We’ll have to wait for an official statement from T-Mobile.
