Former NFL RB Cierre Wood receives life sentence after pleading guilty to murder of five-year-old girl

Former running back Cierre Wood, who played for five NFL teams and three CFL teams, is sentenced to life imprisonment after pleading guilty to the murder of a five-year-old girl in 2019.

According to the Associated Press, Wood agreed to a plea deal in April in which he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and child abuse, and will be eligible for parole after 10 years.

He must also serve a sentence of between 28 months and six years for child abuse. The sentences will be served consecutively.

Technically, Wood entered what is known as an Alford plea, which is considered an admission of guilt but allows him to maintain his innocence.

The child’s mother, Amy Taylor, pleaded guilty separately to first-degree murder and child abuse.

In April 2019, La’Rayah Davis was found dead in a Las Vegas apartment. She had 20 broken ribsinternal bleeding, liver damage and bruises to the heart, diaphragm and connective tissue, according to the autopsy report.

Taylor told police at the time that she sat on the girl while disciplining her. Wood said he used drills as a means of discipline, and he claimed Davis fell backwards while doing sit-ups and hit her head on the carpeted floor.

Wood went undrafted out of Notre Dame in 2013 and began his career with the Texans. He also played for the Patriots, Ravens, Seahawks and Bills before moving to Canada.
