Former Notre Dame and NFL player sentenced to life in prison for death of 5-year-old

Former Notre Dame running back Cierre Wood was sentenced to prison Tuesday for the death of his girlfriend’s 5-year-old daughter in his apartment in April 2019.

Wood played running back at Notre Dame from 2009-2012 before a brief NFL and CFL career. Notre Dame fans will probably remember him best for his memorable touchdown run in the 2012 upset win at Oklahoma.

Wood briefly played for the Texans, Patriots, Ravens, Seahawks and Bills in the NFL.

Wood, now 33, pleaded guilty in April to second-degree murder and child abuse.

Wood was sentenced to life in prison. He has the possibility of parole after 10 years for the murder charge. In addition, Clark County District Judge Jacqueline Bluth ordered Wood to serve a prison sentence of between 28 months and six years for the child molestation charge. He must serve the sentences consecutively.

According to Nevada state court records, Wood entered what is known as an Alford plea – a formal admission of guilt in which he simultaneously maintained his innocence.

They also state that the child’s mother, Amy Taylor, 31, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and child abuse as part of an agreement with prosecutors earlier this year. The Las Vegas medical examiner’s office said the child, La’Rayah Davis, died of blunt force injuries on April 9, 2019.
