Jefferson County resident asks for help after garbage collection failed for several weeks

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – An Amwaste customer called this week asking for help. Willie Mae White says her trash hasn’t been picked up in three weeks. But now it seems safe to pick it up.

Ms. White says an Amwaste manager called her just hours after I left her house and told her her trash was being taken away and that she would receive a three-week credit.

She was, of course, overjoyed and the reason for this is easy to understand: hundreds of maggots are now infesting the constantly full garbage cans.

White says that once she put the extra garbage bags in her shed, the smell was overwhelming. It had been so long since the last garbage pickup that 16 bags fit in the shed.

She said her complaints had gone unanswered as of Tuesday, but she has now submitted a request through the county’s website.

“This is what it looks like, and it’s even worse. This time I just decided there was no way I was going to have that much trash in my house for another three weeks,” White said.

To fill out a request yourself, you can contact Amwaste via the My Jeffco app. Simply open the app, click on “Requests”, create a new request, select “Trash” as the type, Please provide your address and include a note about the problem.
