NEW YORK – JD Martinez felt the wrath of Athletics fireball thrower Joe Boyle on Tuesday night.

The Mets’ designated hitter was taken off the field before his second at-bat in the third inning after a 99.6 mph fastball was caught off his left elbow during his first plate appearance of the inning.

The Mets announced that Martinez was dealing with a bruised left elbow and was replaced in the lineup by Mark Vientos, who made his first appearance after being held out of Sunday’s game with a left ankle injury.

Martinez initially stayed in the game and scored the Mets’ first run on an RBI single by Jose Iglesias before later walking down the tunnel in the section with the Mets’ training staff.

When Martinez was taken off the field in the bottom of the third inning, the Mets were trailing the A’s 7-1.

In his first season with the Mets, the 36-year-old designated hitter has a batting average of .257/.345/.436 with 12 home runs, 53 RBI, 19 doubles and 34 runs in 88 games. He struggled in early August, hitting a batting average of .188 with one home run, six RBI and three runs in 10 games.
