Houston man changes his life and opens hair salon school with help from FOX 26

In a sequel nearly 26 years in the making, a Houston man shares how a request for help from FOX 26 is now helping him give back to his community.

Calvin Williams called FOX 26 business reporter Tom Zizka in late 1998 when he and other students were having trouble with a now-defunct barber school that was taking money from them but not turning over school records to state regulators. Thanks to that investigation, Williams was able to prove he had studied and get his barber license.

FOX 26 Houston is now available on the FOX LOCAL app via Apple TV, Amazon FireTV, Roku, Google Android TV, Samsung TV and Vizio!

After 26 years as a hairdresser, he, like many of us, has grown a little older, wiser and greyer: “I’m not just selling a dream. I’m living proof that you can change.”

Now that retirement seems more attractive, Williams is about to open the doors of the Icon School of Barbering on Scott Street, where he hopes to teach the craft to a new generation of barbers who may also be as good listeners, advisors and artists as he is.

“I want to give other people the opportunity to change their lives. Because being a hairdresser changed my life, really changed it,” says Williams. “It was one of the better decisions I’ve ever made.”

It’s also a decision, he says, that began to gain momentum years ago when he needed a little help getting his dream back on track.

“When I look back and look at what got me here, I have to include you (FOX 26).”

Williams is currently awaiting a state inspection to clear the final hurdles to opening the school. Once the inspection is complete, classes can begin and there is a waiting list for enrollment.
