After Monday’s game against the Chicago White Sox, newly signed left-hander Jazz Chisholm said his left elbow was a little sore but ultimately felt fine. Chisholm injured his left arm in the fifth inning when he slid to home plate and scored on an infield single by Anthony Volpe from second base.

“I’m not too worried about it. We’ve gone through all the tests and all the tests we’ve done here have been pretty positive. I still feel it a little bit, still hurt a little bit, but I think we’ll get through it.”

However, on Tuesday night, the Yankees announced that Chisholm would be placed on the injured list because of a UCL injury. The team had not yet decided if he would need immediate surgery.

That’s certainly not what you want to hear as a Yankee fan, considering Chisholm has been one of the team’s best offensive players in recent weeks. Since coming over from the Miami Marlins, Jazz has played 14 games for the Yankees, hitting .316/.361/.702, including seven home runs and 11 RBIs, with a 26.2% strikeout rate, 6.6% walk rate, and a wRC+ of 195.

Effects of Chisholm’s absence

Ultimately, the loss of Chisholm is a big blow to a Yankee team that is already thin on the infield. They will have to rely on DJ LeMahieu and Oswaldo Cabrera to fill the gaps. However, Aaron Boone suggested they should look to Triple-A for a replacement. Oswald Peraza could be next in line for a chance.

Check exchange options

The 24-year-old prospect has played 64 games in Triple-A this season, hitting .244/.352/.384, including eight home runs and 36 RBIs. Peraza is an excellent defender but has struggled offensively. Since July, Peraza has hit just .191, so the Bombers could consider Jorbit Vivas instead. The 23-year-old left-hander has played 58 games in Triple-A, hitting .242 and having an OBP of .379. He’s better suited to second base but has experience at the hot corner, so the Yankees will have a tough decision to make.

Chisholm’s prospects for recovery

Hopefully Chisholm won’t miss the rest of the season, especially since UCL injuries can be problematic.
