Brevard County could approve conversion of old golf course into new residential areas

TITUSVILLE, Florida. – In a neighborhood in northern Brevard County, the trend of redesigning old golf courses is almost complete.

Last fall, some residents of the closed Sherwood Golf Course in Titusville reacted unfavorably to a developer’s plans to build hundreds of new homes on the old course.

Brevard County then reviewed this polarizing request and forwarded it to the Planning and Zoning Committee, which took it up on Monday evening.

Neighbors who spoke with News 6 reporter James Sparvero, such as Laura Morra, had the opportunity to share their concerns about traffic and flooding with the panel.

“It’s going to be difficult to get out of my driveway,” Morra said.

Tom Erdman sided with Morra and said 595 additional homes would be a lot for the neighborhood.

“We need controlled, intelligent growth – not uncontrolled growth,” Erdman said.

The developer, the Ballarena Group of South Florida, announced the construction of a stormwater retention basin that will be flooded when it rains to reduce flooding everywhere else.

An engineer said the development was an opportunity to improve the area.

“Our desire is to improve the drainage situation in this area because doing nothing means they will have to live with the flooding problems forever,” said Bruce Moia.

One neighbor even spoke out in favor of the plan. He said he was planning to buy a new house.

“This subdivision will be the best thing for this area,” he said.

The final decision on whether to approve the redesign of the golf course rests with the county commissioners.

The vote is scheduled for the county commission meeting on September 5.
