21-year-old man arrested after car theft that led to a police chase

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Memphis police say a 21-year-old man was arrested after stealing a man’s car and leading police on a chase.

On Monday, officers responded to a robbery in Claudette Cove shortly after 5:30 a.m.

The victim explained to police officers that he was trying to jump-start one of his vehicles when three armed men approached him.

They demanded his belongings, searched his pockets and then drove away in his 2019 Jeep Cherokee, followed by a gray sedan.

At 4:00 p.m., some officers noticed the Jeep Cherokee in the area of ​​Airways Boulevard and Lamar Avenue.

They tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to stop.

Officers began pursuing the vehicle until it stopped on Pendleton Street.

The suspect then got out of the car and ran toward the El Dorado Apartments.

He was soon caught and taken into custody.

Darshun Smith, 21, is charged with auto theft, aggravated robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a dangerous crime, willful escape in a motor vehicle and evading arrest on foot.
