Mark Zuckerberg had a sculpture of his wife made, like a good Roman

Mark Zuckerberg had a sculpture of his wife made, like a good Roman

Mark Zuckerberg is going through a phase right now. A flashy rebranding? A midlife crisis? Maybe he’s just so incredibly rich that he doesn’t know what to do with himself anymore.

Be that as it may, the Facebook guy we all knew to be a huge jerk is becoming more and more concerned with flaunting his masculinity.

Brazilian Jujitsu/MMA training? Checked off.

Surfing in a tuxedo, drinking a big swig, and holding an American flag? Check.

Going wild boar hunting with a bow and arrow? You can bet on it.

And today he announced on Instagram: “The Roman tradition of making sculptures of one’s own wife is being revived.”

To create this giant statue of his wife Priscilla Chan, Zuck commissioned American artist, experimental architect and certified hypebeast Daniel Arsham.

Arsham is an interesting choice: his big break came in 2005, when Hedi Slimane asked him to create a permanent installation in the Dior boutique in LA. Since then, he has become best known for his crumbling sculptures of contemporary cultural artifacts—like archaeology from the future—as well as his collaborations with major brands like Tiffany & Co and Pokémon.

His piece for Zuckerberg fits aesthetically with some of his recent works in bronze, currently on display in Venice, which borrow from classical works from the Louvre archives.

All in all, it’s an objectively well-made statue, created by an objectively interesting artist, and it’s just objectively so weird compared to everything else Zuckerberg has become in recent years.
