The first live demo of Made by Google was a total failure

“I’m working late because my demo failed” will be Google’s version of the summer song “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter.

Today’s Made by Google event saw the unveiling of a ton of new hardware and software, including the long-awaited new Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel Watch 3, and Pixel Buds Pro 2. Android 15, the long-awaited next-generation software update, was also released, bringing a majority of AI-powered features. AI was a focus of today’s keynote, even at a hardware-focused event.

For the first half hour of today’s Made by Google event, Google attempted to show off new and improved capabilities of its mobile AI, Gemini. In the first live demo, Gemini attempted to scan and analyze an image of Sabrina Carpenter’s upcoming tour dates to determine if she was coming to San Francisco. The host introduced the attempt by saying that all of today’s demos will be live, and hoped the demo gods were on their side today. They were not. The live audience and thousands of virtual livestreamers watched in horror, shuddering and laughing as the demo failed.

After a second failed attempt and a device change, Gemini finally worked. But the panic and horror over the failed demo is quite disturbing, as the company opened the event by repeating what it said at Google I/O earlier this year – it’s “in our Gemini era.”
