Google honors actor Alan Rickman with a doodle – but not for his role in “Harry Potter”

  • Google celebrated Alan Rickman’s career with a doodle of the popular actor.

  • Rickman, known for his roles in “Harry Potter,” “Die Hard” and “Galaxy Quest,” died in 2016.

  • On this day in 1987, Rickman launched his career with a Broadway performance of “Les Liaisons Dangereuses.”

Today’s Google Doodle celebrates legendary actor Alan Rickman – but not for his infamous role as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter franchise.

Instead, seven years after the beloved actor’s tragic death, the daily homepage doodle focuses on the anniversary of one of Rickman’s lesser-known roles: his portrayal of the antihero Vicomte de Valmont in the Broadway play “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” in 1987, which was crucial in launching his career.

Rickman’s first role was with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1985, but the Broadway performance took place exactly 36 years ago today. The production ran for 149 performances and earned writer Christopher Hampton a Tony nomination for Best Show and director Howard Davies a Tony for Best Director.

Although he was not nominated for his performance in this particular role, Rickman’s career took off from there after he took on the villainous role of Hans Gruber in 1988’s Die Hard. He then went on to play a series of antagonistic characters and lead roles in Galaxy Quest and Sense and Sensibility before landing the role of Snape in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 2001.

“Throughout his career, Rickman has received numerous nominations and awards for his acting career and has even directed three plays and two films,” the Google Doodle says. “He will be remembered for his iconic roles on screen, his philanthropy and his kind and sensitive nature off screen.”
