Sarasota County speeds up permitting process and waives some fees after Debby

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – Permits related to storm damage from Hurricane Debby are being expedited.

Sarasota County officials told ABC7 that certain building permit fees have been temporarily suspended if the repair involves documented damage from Hurricane Debby. The temporary suspension of fees applies to permit applications submitted through Sept. 13.

Fees have been temporarily suspended for the following: re-roofing or replacement, doors and windows (size replacement), interior repairs after water ingress, minor electrical repairs, electricity fees, tents, temporary use permits, pool cage repairs and air conditioning replacement.

For residents whose homes have been damaged by flooding, removing and replacing drywall is likely to be part of the restoration effort.

A building permit is not required for drywall removal. A building permit is required for drywall replacement that is more than 2 feet above the finished floor. Sarasota County has temporarily suspended building permit fees for these repair jobs. A permit is not required for drywall repairs that are 2 feet or less above the finished floor and are reported as storm damage.
