Running a marathon is an impressive feat on any terrain, but the challenge of completing 42.6 kilometers against the backdrop of the world’s highest mountain – Mount Everest – is even greater.
Held every year on May 29 since 2005 and considered the highest marathon in the world, the Everest Marathon celebrates the historic ascent of Mount Everest by Tibetan mountaineer Tenzing Norgay and New Zealand mountaineer and explorer Sir Edmund Hillary on May 29, 1953. The intense marathon begins at Mount Everest Base Camp at an altitude of 5,364 meters and then descends to Namche Bazaar at an altitude of 3,440 meters, requiring competitors to overcome steep climbs, rocky trails and dramatic weather changes.
As one of the sponsors of this year’s marathon, 3M provided the runners with padded jackets and sleeping bags with 3M™ Thinsulate™ technology and race T-shirts with 3M™ Scotchgard™ technology. The runners also wore outdoor jackets with 3M Scotchgard water-repellent technology. These science-based materials from 3M ensured that the athletes stayed dry and comfortable and could focus on the race.
The winner of this year’s Everest Marathon was Arjun Rai Kulung, who finished with a time of 3 hours, 52 minutes and 2 seconds.
