Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart joins the Match of the Day team for the new season

Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart will appear as a studio pundit on Match of the Day in the new season.

Hart, who won 75 caps for his country, was part of the BBC Sport team that covered the Three Lions’ run to the final of the 2024 European Championships this summer.

The 37-year-old played 340 games in the English top division and helped Manchester City win two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and two League Cups.

He ended his playing career at the end of last season after helping Celtic win the Scottish Premiership and Cup double.

“I’m very excited, very proud and looking forward to growing into an incredible role in something I grew up with,” Hart said.

“I want to try to give back as much as possible from my career and continue to learn.

“I am so excited to be in an incredible environment and, most importantly, to learn in a new part of my life.”

Having retired from playing, Hart will be in the studio alongside regular presenters Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer when Match of the Day – which first aired in 1964 – returns for the new season on Saturday at 10.20pm (BST).

“Match of the Day has stood the test of time,” added Hart.

“It’s never stood still. It’s always trying to grow and always trying to build and always trying to bring the game closer to its viewers in every way possible.”

The BBC also expects to announce several other big names for a newly assembled studio panel, with Micah Richards also set to take on a more prominent role as a pundit this season.
