CrowdStrike President Accepts Most Epic Fail Award for Global IT Outage | BANG Showbiz English

The President of CrowdStrike personally accepted the Most Epic Fail award at DEF CON.

The cybersecurity company was mocked at the annual Pwnie Awards for being responsible for last month’s global IT outage, triggered by a flaw in its antitrust software that left people unable to access apps and services – including major airlines, trains and banks.

President Michael Sentonas admitted on stage that it was “definitely not” an award “to be proud of.”

He later admitted, “It’s super important to own it.”

Delta Airlines accused CrowdStrike of “negligence” and said it lost at least $500 million due to the network outage.

The company sent a software update to its customers that resulted in millions of Windows devices being disabled worldwide and the US airline having to cancel flights as a result.

At Delta, which is the subject of a class action lawsuit by affected passengers, operations were disrupted for several days after the outage, even after other airlines had recovered and canceled around 7,000 flights in five days.

The company threatened legal action against CrowdStrike and Microsoft over the outages, but both denied responsibility.

Last week, Delta CEO Ed Bastian wrote in a letter to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that the incident was “unacceptable.”

He wrote: “Our customers and employees deserve better.”

CrowdStrike said it would defend itself “aggressively” in the event of any legal action, while Microsoft announced it would fight back after a preliminary review showed that Delta, unlike its competitors, had an outdated IT infrastructure.

An airline lawyer then wrote to CrowdStrike, insisting that there is “no basis – none whatsoever – to believe that Delta was in any way responsible for the faulty software that crashed systems around the world.”

In response, a CrowdStrike spokesperson accused Delta of spreading “a misleading narrative.”
