Teaser for Battlefield 7’s open world divides fans

Teaser for Battlefield 7’s open world divides fans

It’s fair to say that the Battlefield series has lost its way in recent years, but Electronic Arts is certainly hoping for a triumphant comeback for the military shooter with the seventh main installment of the game.

It’s easy to forget that EA’s Battlefield series has been around longer than Activision’s Call of Duty, albeit only by a year, but still. Despite being one of the longest-running video games of modern times, the latest entry in the DICE-developed military shooter has unfortunately been a bit of a mess.

Check out our Battlefield 2042 “Wins & Fails” video below!

When Battlefield 2042 was released in 2021, to say it had a rocky start is an understatement. It already faced a difficult task as it abandoned the single-player campaign, but when it lacked basic multiplayer features and was plagued by bugs at launch, Battlefield 2024 was doomed to failure from the start.

Admittedly, the developers at DICE have worked hard to correct the errors Battlefield 2042 and I’m sure it’s a much better game now, but for many too much damage had already been done. So EA and DICE are surely hoping that Battlefield 7 beats everyone else and once again establishes itself as a contender for Call of Duty.

One way EA and DICE could bring the next Battlefield back in a big way is to make it an open-world game, or so a job posting for a Senior Environment Artist leads us to believe.

As first spotted by Tech4Gamers forum member cindiestarlight, the job posting in question requires the potential applicant to have experience working on open-world games as a “plus.” Although EA has yet to officially announce the next Battlefield, CEO Andrew Wilson previously hinted that the game will be one of its “most ambitious projects yet.”

Of course, Andrew Wilson’s words should be taken with a grain of salt, because one of his tasks is to impress investors and inspire potential customers, as is the case with Battlefield 2042and we all know how that turned out.

In a Reddit thread discussing the possibility of the next Battlefield being an open-world version, fans seem to be divided on the matter, but comparisons have been drawn to the popular free-to-play shooter. Planet page“I’d honestly love a Battlefield game with maps this size and matches that last forever. I wonder how they’d handle the destruction though,” asked poklane.

“There is so little reason to have confidence in DICE’s current version,” DeeOhEf replied.

“I wondered what they meant by open world, but Planet page in the back of my mind it sounds exciting!” said a joyful Wyzzlex.

I have serious concerns about whether the open world approach is the right way to go for the next Battlefield. Maybe it could work in multiplayer, but when it comes to single player campaigns, I’m all for a somewhat linear, narrative-driven story.

We’ll keep you updated as soon as we get more information about the next Battlefield entry. At least for now Battlefield 2042 is available for PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
