Blue Jays rising star wastes no time in endearing himself to fans with epic MLB debut

Will Wagner has played exactly one major league game, but it was a memorable one. The 25-year-old went 3 of 4, with a double, a run and a run driven, making him only the fourth player in Toronto Blue Jays history to have three or more hits in his first MLB game.

This makes him the only player in Blue Jays history to achieve this feat, alongside Danny Ainge (1979), Pat Borders (1988) and JP Arencibia (2010).

Wagner, an 18th-round pick of the Houston Astros in the 2021 MLB Draft, was recently acquired from the Blue Jays in the Yusei Kikuchi trade. He has now joined Joey Loperfido in the major leagues and the two represent a big part of the Jays’ future, so it will be nice to see them auditioning in 2024 for roles in 2025.

Wagner is often compared to teammate Spencer Horwitz, as they both swing the bat from the left, both have a contact-over-power approach, they get a lot of walks and don’t strike out often, and they even play the same defensive positions. This could eventually lead to some awkward setups on defense, as they’re both limited to first and/or second base (though Wagner can play a bit of third base as well), but having both bats in the lineup could be huge.

In 77 minor league games this year, Wagner has hit six home runs, scored 43 runs, and scored 57 of his own runs. He’s also issued 59 walks (!) and has only 37 strikeouts. His overall batting average between the Astros and Blue Jays systems is .315, while his OPS of .876 is also above average. He seems ready for a major league role, and the Blue Jays happen to have plenty of playing time in the near future.
