Wordle isn’t the only puzzle game. Here are some other games you should try next

Wordle was the biggest pun of 2022 and is still a huge hit two years later. It was developed by Josh Wardle for his partner and later bought by The New York Times. CNET’s Gael Cooper offers plenty of tips and tricks for solving each Wordle puzzle, but if you’re done playing today – or just enjoy puzzle games – these options are well worth your time.

Wordle challenges players to guess a five-letter word in six or fewer attempts (we have a Two-step strategy to help you solve the puzzle every time). After each guess, the game shows gray blocks for the wrong letters, yellow blocks for the right letters in the wrong place, and green blocks for the right letters in the right place. It’s addictive, but after you solve the daily puzzle or use up all your guesses, you have to wait until the next day to play again.

You probably already have some tips, tricks and Lessons from the popular word gameso why not apply your new problem-solving skills to other puzzles too? After all, Wordle isn’t the only game out there. Here are 10 other puzzle games like Wordle that you’ll probably enjoy.

Connections

Another puzzle from the NYT, Connections, is a tricky word game. “Players must select four groups of four words without making more than four mistakes,” says the NYT wrote on X, formerly Twitter. There are also four colour-coded difficulty levels for each game; yellow is the easiest, then green, blue and finally purple. The game is also similar to the BBC quiz show Only Connect, and the host of the show took X to point out the connection – see what I did there?

You can play Connections in any web browser, but you will need a NYT subscription (from 1 US dollar per week) to play.

Strands

Strands is another puzzle from the NYT, but this game is more like a word search puzzle than Wordle and Connections. This game presents a theme each day to help you find words in a grid. In Strands, words can appear forward, backward, top to bottom, or any other way like a traditional word search puzzle, and words can also be shaped like an “L” or zigzag. Once you find a word, tap the first letter and drag your finger to the other letters. Every letter in the puzzle is used, so if you still have letters that aren’t connected to words, you’re not done yet.

Quartile is a new word game that Apple News Plus subscribers can access via their iPhone or iPad that runs iOS17.5 or later. In this word game, you are given 20 tiles with letters on them and try to put them together to form different words. The longest words are four tiles long and are called quartiles. The game can be difficult, but finding just one of the quartiles is as satisfying as remembering something that was just on the tip of your tongue.

You can play Quartiles on an iPhone or iPad, but you will need an Apple News subscription (which starts at $13 per month) to play.

Several Wordle offshoots: Dordle, Quordle, Octordle and Sedecordle

Are you ready for a challenge? If you love Wordle and want puzzle games that require more brain power, you should either Dordle, Quordle, Octordle or Sedecordle. Each of these word games is similar to Wordle, but there are more rows, columns, and words to solve. Each game requires you to solve a different number of words at once: Dordle requires you to solve two words at once, Quordle requires you to solve four at once, Octordle requires you to solve eight at once, and Sedecordle requires a whopping 16. Good luck.

You can play Dordle, Quordle, Octordle or Sedecordle in any web browser.

Liar

“Lewdle is a game of swear words,” reads this game’s content warning. “If you are offended by the use of foul language, vulgarity, or profanity, it’s probably not for you.” Translation: It’s Wordle, but with swear words. The words range from the innocuous – like “poop” – to words that would make a sailor blush. Thankfully, despite this game’s content warning, there are no references to swear words. Binders are not included. Like Wordle, grey, yellow and green blocks are used in the same way and there is only one puzzle per day. So go ahead and let the swear words flow!

You can play Lewdle in any web browser. You can also download this title from Apple’s AppStore or the Google Play save.

Tired of seeing those gray, yellow, and green blocks all over your social media feed? Try Antiwordle. While Wordle wants you to guess a word in as few tries as possible, Antiwordle wants you to avoid the word by guessing as many times as possible. When you guess, the letters turn gray, yellow, or red. Gray means the letter doesn’t appear in the word and can’t be used again, yellow means the letter appears in the word and must be considered every time you guess, and red means the letter is in the exact position in the word and is fixed in place. If you can use every letter on the keyboard without guessing the word correctly, you win. Honestly, I found this version of Wordle much harder than the original.

Absurd

Absurdle bills itself as the “confrontational version” of Wordle. While Wordle nudges you in the right direction with each guess, Absurdle tries not to give you the right answer. According to the game’s website, “Absurdle gives away as little information as possible with each guess, changing the secret word when necessary.” Absurdle doesn’t choose a word for the player to guess at the start of the game. Instead, it uses the player’s guesses to narrow down its list of words and keep the game going as long as possible. The final word may not even contain a yellow letter from one of your previous guesses. You can guess as many times as you like, which is helpful, and the best score you can get is four. Have fun!

You can play Absurdle in any web browser.
