Was Kate Middleton inspired by Grace Kelly when choosing her new ring?

A gold ring adorned with sapphires and white diamonds sits elegantly on her ring finger. At first, there was some debate about the origin of this rare piece of jewelry: could it be the engagement ring that Prince William gave her when they met in St. Andrews, set with their respective birthstones, pearls and garnets?

Others wondered if it could be the same eternity ring that Prince William reportedly gave his wife for the birth of their first son, Prince George. Or was it perhaps a new gift from William, perhaps to celebrate their 13th wedding anniversary, which the couple celebrated on April 29 this year?

Kate Middleton and Prince William surprised the country with a video celebrating the British team’s success at the Paris Olympics

Be that as it may, this eternity ring appears to be a temporary replacement for Kate’s most famous piece of jewelry, her sapphire and diamond engagement ring that once belonged to Princess Diana. A symbol of remembrance, love and legacy, the ring features a 12-carat opal-cut sapphire surrounded by 14 round-cut diamonds. After Princess Diana’s death, Prince Harry inherited the sapphire ring but offered it to his brother William after the prince proposed to Kate Middleton.

The ring that can be seen in the video of the Olympic celebration is significantly thinner than the engagement ring, and supporters of the Royal Fashion Police IInstagram described it as a more everyday piece of jewellery that matched the homey feel of William and Kate’s tribute to Team GB. One commenter described the ring as a “beautiful alternative” to her engagement ring, noting that it was “nice to have a ring with a less noticeable profile for everyday wear”.

This dual approach to the jewelry adorning Kate’s ring finger is reminiscent of another princess who is perhaps more famous for her rings than any other royal in history. Grace Kelly, Princess Grace of Monaco, was given an iconic Cartier engagement ring by her fiancé, Prince Rainier III. The legendary three-stone ring – named after the enormous 10.48-carat emerald-cut diamond in the center, framed by two baguette side stones – went on to inspire the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Amal Clooney.
