Developer of God Of War quietly gives hints about new game

We can’t wait to find out more

Santa Monica Studio has been one of Sony’s leading development teams since its founding in 1999, so it’s always huge news when a new game is on the way.

Although Santa Monica Studios is known for the legendary God of War series, which debuted on the PlayStation 2 in 2005, the very first title was the rather unknown racing game Kinetic published in 2001.

But since the release of God of War in 2005, excluding external titles such as Twisted Metal: Black, Trip And The Unfinished Swan To name just a few, the talents at Santa Monica Studios are dedicated exclusively to joking with Kratos.

So imagine the excitement when rumors started swirling that Santa Monica Studio might be working on a new IP, meaning this could be the studio’s first non-God of War game in about 20 years.

While neither Sony nor Santa Monica Studio have announced the new IP, a LinkedIn profile of art director Glauco Longhi suggests that a new game is already in the early stages of production. Now we’ve been tipped off again, but this time by current God of War director and writer Cory Barlog.

Barlog tweeted a picture of himself outside the Santa Monica studio with the caption: “After ages in the wilderness of the Badlands, I return to the mothership to cause chaos.”

Of course, Barlog could be hinting at anything or nothing, but many fans are hoping that it is either the rumored new IP or the next full sequel to God of War Ragnarök. Only time will tell.

It’s almost certain that there will be a new God of War game at some point, whether it’s this generation, the next generation, or a bit of both. Still, it would also be exciting news if Santa Monica Studio is ready to reveal details about its as-yet-unannounced project.

God of War Ragnarök is now available for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. It will also be released for PC next month, on September 19, 2024.
