Broward schools hope for a quieter day – NBC 6 South Florida

Parents and students at Broward County Public Schools hope the second day of school will be much less bumpy.

Sweeping changes came into force on Monday, from new metal detectors at some secondary schools to tighter restrictions on students’ use of mobile phones.

And the rollout was not convincing.

Still, school district officials said it was a pretty good first day, despite long delays for some students who had to go through the new metal detectors.

Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn said some students waited in line for between 30 minutes and over an hour to get into their schools.

“Of course, there were some unexpected delays once all students were back on campus. We certainly want to apologize to the public because we know this is a stressful time. It’s a new routine for students,” Hepburn said.

The superintendent said each of the district’s 38 high schools with metal detectors has about two to four of the devices, but more will need to be added after Monday.

School officials also said the most important thing was that no weapons were reported at any school.

“There have been many delays, but no firearms, knives or weapons have been brought onto our campuses and our students are safe,” said School Board Chair Lori Alhadeff.

Another big change that came into effect today is restrictions on mobile phones.

From now on, students must put their phones away and switch to airplane mode – unless their teacher instructs them otherwise.

Airpods and headphones are completely banned.

The restrictions apply throughout the day, including during lunch.

“Students will have their cell phones with them, so we ask them to turn them off or put them in airplane mode,” Hepburn said.
