Warner Bros. wants to license games as the division’s revenues are falling

The status of Warner Bros. Discovery’s video game division is once again in flux, as the company hopes to license its major products.

During the conference call on the results of the second quarter of the financial year 2024-2025 (thank you, IGN), CEO David Zaslav said outside studios could “exploit” franchises like Harry Potter and DC. “We have 11 studios here and a lot of intellectual property. (…) We need to get bigger.”

In the past, WB has licensed its games to third-party developers. But many of them, like Rocksteady and TT Games (together with The player first more recently) were later acquired to continue producing WB titles.

Jamie Perette, global head of streaming/gaming at WB, sees licensing as a contribution to balancing the gaming business. MultiVersus is doing well in the free-to-play space, but he acknowledged that full-priced games are “unreliable” and take three or four years (or more) to produce and cost millions.

In other words: WB still suffers from Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Rocksteadys worried Live service shooter has been repeatedly called a failure for WB Games, both in terms of its own achievements and Hogwarts Legacy.

While the 2023 game is a Billion dollar hit, Suicide Squad led to a 41 percent decline in gaming revenue. “We are coming off a record year with Hogwarts unfortunately on the other side of the spectrum with Squad” said Perrette.

Earlier this week it was reported that WB Sale its gaming division completely. Together with Squads ongoing disappointment, the WB-owned NetherRealm recently announced its Mobile team and his telephone game Mortal Kombat: Onslaught.
