The Evans and Brant Historical Societies collaborated to create a historical exhibit at the Erie County Fair. The theme of this year’s show was “Celebrations and celebrations.” The two groups decided to highlight the Brant Strawberry Festival, which ran from 1956 to 1970 and was attended by thousands each year.
The exhibition depicted many aspects of the celebration. The parade, the royal family, children’s fun and activities, proud farmers, strawberries and fields, and community involvement were all presented.
The exhibit included a small fruit stand selling strawberries and a festival princess on a float. Images highlighting the various activities of the festival, including Governor Harriman and the appointment of “Strawberry Festival in New York State” are visible.
About 25 members worked on the project, including many who made nearly 1,000 pink and white flowers for the float.
The societies were delighted to receive first place and Best of Show awards from the other 20 exhibitors. A small version of the exhibition will be on display at Evans Town Hall after the show closes.
