Harry Potter star Bonnie Wright says she is disappointed with her limited screen time in the franchise

  • Bonnie Wright talked about her role as Ginny Weasley in the Harry Potter films.

  • Wright said it was “a little disappointing” that Ginny didn’t get as much screen time.

  • “Many scenes with all the characters were cut from the book for the film,” she said.

“Harry Potter” star Bonnie Wright said that the limited screen time of her character Ginny Weasley in the series was “a little disappointing.”

“I definitely feel like there was a fear of doing well and being the best in building my character, for example,” Wright said on the latest episode of Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast “Inside of You.”

“Like, ‘Oh God, am I doing justice to this character that people love?'” she continued. “So that was always difficult, especially when inevitably a lot of scenes with each character were cut from the book to the movie. So you didn’t really have that much to show in the movie.”

The first part of the film series based on the fantasy novels by JK Rowling, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” was released in 2001.

Wright was 9 when she made the first film. At the time, she had no idea that her character would marry the titular wizard, as not all of the books in the series had been published yet.

Like most book adaptations, the HP films were unable to adapt all of the novels. This meant that Wright had fewer opportunities to show the complexity of her character on screen, although her character became more prominent as the films progressed.

“It was a little disappointing at times because some parts of the character just weren’t expressed because there weren’t any scenes for them,” she said. “I guess that made me a little worried or just frustrated.”

Wright also said there were no discussions with producers about involving Ginny more in the films because “there was no room for major changes in the scripts.”

“A million executives have been through all of this,” she said. “I think what I may have taken away – which I don’t take to heart as much now – is that I felt like my anxiety stemmed more from thinking, ‘Oh, I’m going to be seen as someone who embodies this character poorly,’ rather than realizing later that I didn’t really have the opportunity to do it. So it wasn’t really my fault.”

Many fans feel that Ginny was not used enough in a franchise with numerous characters in the films.

“When fans share that disappointment, they do it in a way that says, ‘We know it wasn’t you. We just wanted more of you.’ And that goes for all the characters. If only there could be five-hour movies.”
