Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood react to Kelly Clarkson’s honest confession about his song

Earlier this week, Kelly Clarkson revealed to Garth Brooks on her daytime talk show that his song “The Dance” helped her cope with her divorce.

The song also inspired Clarkson to pen down her feelings in a “therapeutic” new single.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Brooks, 58, and his wife Trisha Yearwood, 56, said they were stunned and touched by Clarkson’s honest confession.

Brooks, a two-time Grammy winner, called the “Piece By Piece” singer “Kelly ‘fricken’ Clarkson” and raved: “The fact that she says that as a fan makes you feel like, ‘Hey, maybe you’re down here doing what you’re supposed to do down here.'”

Yearwood called the exchange “testament to the power of music.”

“Songs mean something different to all of us depending on what we’re going through. So this song, ‘The Dance,’ is probably the song that gets played the most at weddings and funerals,” the “Trisha’s Southern Kitchen” star continued. “Then when Kelly goes through a divorce, it’s like…everyone has their own story and the cool thing about music is you can find a way to fit it into your story.”

“The Dance,” released in 1989, is about being grateful for an experience, even when it is painful.

The song contains the lyrics “I’m glad I didn’t know/ How it would all end/ How it would all play out/ Our lives are better left to chance/ I would have missed the pain/ But I would have missed the dance.”

Clarkson, 38, said Monday that the song perfectly sums up her feelings about divorcing her husband Brandon Blackstock. She also revealed that her new song includes the lines, “Even though my heart is broken, it was still worth the dance.”
