Everything that happened on day nine of BYU Football Fall Camp

PROVO, UT – Week three of BYU’s 2024 fall camp began Monday with a practice at the indoor training facility. Here’s a recap of everything that happened during the media portion of day nine of fall camp.

The defense had the play of the day on Monday. Utah State transfer quarterback McCae Hillstead threw a deep pass down the sideline to freshman Ty West. Sophomore safety Chika Ebunoha was step-for-step with West in coverage – Ebunoha dove in front of Hillstead’s pass and was able to intercept the ball.

Junior wide receiver Keelan Marion caught three balls in front of the media on Monday. Marion caught a ball from Jake Retzlaff on a quick hitch during the team portion for a short gain.

At the end of practice, the team ran a few situations where the offense had 35 seconds to get from the halfway line into field goal range. On Gerry Bohanon’s first snap in the situation, he threw a pass to Marion that gained him 20-25 yards. Marion ran along a narrow post and Bohanon hit him on the run before the safety could block the pass lane.

On the next play, Bohanon hit Marion again and quickly took him out of the game to set up a shorter field goal.

BYU declined to name a starting quarterback on Monday after Saturday’s scrimmage. Reps will continue to be split evenly between Jake Retzlaff and Gerry Bohanon.

In this writer’s opinion, Jake Retzlaff had the upper hand on Monday. In a small sample size, Retzlaff was sharp. He completed every throw he had in the media section. His first throw was the aforementioned quick hitch to Keelan Marion for a couple of yards. His next throw was a quick slant to Jojo Phillips for a first down.

His third and final throw came during the situation work. Retzlaff threw a ball to Kody Epps on a corner route that gave him a gain of 25-30 yards. This throw enabled the potentially game-winning field goal.

Bohanon wasn’t bad, but he wasn’t as accurate as Retzlaff. Bohanon had two missed shots in a row during the team game. On one play, he narrowly missed Keanu Hill and therefore didn’t miss the pass. On the same drive, he narrowly missed Parker Kingston at the perimeter.

Bohanon also had his share of good moments. Bohanon showed off his escape ability on a play where the defensive line collapsed the pocket. Bohanon escaped and gained a few yards before being thrown to the ground. Bohanon made a spin move that could have separated a few tacklers and led to a play with lots of yards.

Bohanon showed off his healthy shoulder on a long out route to Jojo Phillips. Bohanon threw a strike to Phillips from the opposite hash line for a first down.

Bohanon also managed a nice drive in the situational part of the training, which made the potentially game-deciding field goal possible.

Cody Hagen and Jojo Phillips made some plays on Monday. Phillips is poised to play a bigger role in 2024. Hagen could break into the rotation in a crowded wide receiver room.

BYU’s top two running backs, LJ Martin and Hinckley Ropati, were held out of Saturday’s practice game. BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick noted that they kept Martin from getting hit. Roderick and Sitake both said they expect Martin to play against Southern Illinois.

As usual, BYU included some practice highlights that the media didn’t see (highlights can be found at the top of this article). Notable highlights from these clips included:
