Some JCPS students had to wait for the bus on the first day of school

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – With so many changes Jefferson County Public Schools has made to transportation this year, some parents were hoping for improvements. WAVE News met some children and a parent waiting for a bus to take them to Olmsted South. It was late on that first day of school.

“It was supposed to come at 7:55, so in about 15 minutes. That’s kind of what it’s like on the first day, but school actually starts at 8:40,” said Shenequa Pearson, the mother of an Olmsted South student. Pearson told her work she would come in later so she could make sure her daughter got to school. She waited as one bus after another passed them. Pearson said she downloaded the Edulog Lite app to follow the bus.

“I couldn’t figure out how to enter the bus number,” Pearson said. So they continued to wait as several buses that didn’t belong to them drove by. “I think I need to take her to school,” Pearson said.

More buses continued to drive past them. The twins, who were also waiting, Facetimed their aunt, who works in a kitchen at JCPS.

“It’s not acceptable how they’re treating these kids this morning. There should have been a call or a text to say there was going to be a delay,” said Kimberly Carter. “It’s sad. Now I’m at work trying to figure out what to do.” Another student recalled having to wait two hours on the first day last year.

“We’re going to miss our entire first period now,” said Brietta Joiner.

As another bus passed by, Pearson told all the girls to get in their cars. It was 8:37 a.m., three minutes before school started. The bus that was supposed to pick them up at 7:55 a.m. finally arrived at their stop at 8:44 a.m. It was 49 minutes late.

WAVE notified JCPS of the incident. The communications director told us the bus was stuck in a 25-minute traffic jam.

Hopefully the second day will be better.
