A Bay Area kayaking couple had a disturbing encounter with a large shark while fishing in Half Moon Bay last week, which was caught on video.

Ian Walters works as a teacher at the Head-Royce School in Oakland. He was filming his friend as they kayaked and fished off Pillar Point Harbor, north of Half Moon Bay, and at the famous big-wave surf spot Mavericks Beach last Tuesday when a shark started following his friend.

“Are you OK?” Walters is heard asking as he sees the shark’s dorsal fin cutting through the water about five meters behind his friend’s kayak.

“Yeah, I’m just starting to move in,” his friend says in the video.

“I’ll follow you, okay?” Walters replies.

In an interview, Walters said that while they realized how lucky they were that the shark did not attack, the experience was more surreal than frightening.

“It followed my buddy for a couple of minutes. We walked closer together and then we saw it circle back around and follow me,” Walters recalled. “And we led it to some seals and looked around for another hour or two and everything was fine.”

Walters shared his video with shark enthusiasts online. Commenters said that the shark was likely a great white shark due to its size of about 14 feet (4.3 meters).

“I never thought I’d get to experience this up close, you know?” Walters said. “I’m glad I did it, and I did it with a friend who was able to calm me down and I calmed him down. We tried not to make it a nuisance.”

He says it might be a while before they go kayaking again, but he definitely has a story to tell his sixth-graders.
