MSNBC’s Joy Reid argued that Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) would have been the “conventionally safest choice” as Vice President Kamala Harris’ Vice-candidate because he is “super white.”

“This is not the choice I expected from her,” Reid said in a TikTok video in response to Harris’ choice for governor of Minnesota. Tim Walz (D) as their vice presidential candidate.

The MSNBC host added that she believes Harris will “become an astronaut,” referring to Kelly, who was an astronaut before entering politics.

“He would have been the safest, most conventional choice for me. White, super white, like a mayonnaise sandwich on a Wonder Bread, white, from a border state, he could have made a strong argument for their handling of the border,” she said.

Reid called the governor of Pennsylvania. Josh Shapiro (D) the “riskiest” of the finalists because of his strong support for Israel in the war against Hamas.

Reid praised Walz’s selection, saying his actions as governor reflect progressive politics and are consistent with Harris’ vision. She also praised the fact that Walz used the word “weird” right at the start to Donald Trump and his running mate JD VanceIn her MSNBC broadcast, Reid said Walz and Harris would “bring joy back” to politics.

“This is a happy choice. It is a choice of the heart. It is a smart choice. It is a choice that comes from a position of strength,” she said. “Vice President Harris is standing by that and her strength and saying, ‘No, I don’t have to vote for who the focus groups would recommend. I will vote for who my heart chooses.'”
