Man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend in southeast Fresno pleads not guilty

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Jonathan Navarro, 26, appeared before a judge for the first time on Wednesday with his left arm in a cast and pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

He is accused of murdering his 26-year-old ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend, 26-year-old Devin McNew, and wounding the woman in southeast Fresno last week.

According to police, McNew and his new girlfriend were delivering some of Navarro’s belongings when an argument broke out between the two men.

“It is important to note that Mr. Navarro and the 26-year-old had a relationship for 10 years,” Fresno Police Lt. Paul Cervantes said at a news conference last week.

According to authorities, Navarro stabbed McNew multiple times, hit the couple with a shovel and slit his own wrists.

All three were taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where McNew succumbed to his injuries.

According to police, the incident was fully captured by video surveillance of the doorbell, which ABC30 legal expert Tony Capozzi said is a key aspect of the case.

“The prosecution will play it back, stop it at a certain point and say, ‘This is what happened. Look what you did there, and look what you did there,'” Capozzi said. “But what’s important is what’s not on the tape. Did something happen before that video was played?”

“I can tell you that the video clearly shows Mr. Navarro attacking the 26-year-old woman and Mr. McNew,” Lt. Cervantes said at a press conference last week.

Capozzi believes witness testimony and character testimony will have a big impact on the case.

“What are the other witnesses going to say? The victim is obviously no longer here, but there were other people there. And what are they going to say about what happened before the video was taken? What kind of argument was it? Was it heated? What was it about?” Capozzi said.

Navarro’s defense attorney John Abel told Action News he is a good father to their nine-year-old child and that this case is confusing because none of those involved have a criminal past.

His bail was set at over $2,000,000.

He will appear in court again for his preliminary hearing at the end of September.

If convicted on all counts, he faces 26 years to life in prison.
