New Hanover County Senior Resource Center introduces new Older Adult Resource Guide

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Senior Resource Center of New Hanover County is introducing its new Older Adult Resource Guide.

It is a kind of high-tech Yellow Pages that helps seniors find available resources according to their specific needs through a centralized access.

“We’re proud of it and it’s easy to use,” said Megan Lanier, virtual services and marketing coordinator. “You can get all the resources you want. I’d say faster than a search engine. These are vetted resources that are reliable and trustworthy.”

This is great news for Barb and Bob Foster. Bob recently had both legs amputated and, despite his positive attitude, the transition hasn’t always been easy.

“I had no idea all these resources were available locally,” said Bob Foster. “That’s good to know.”

Seniors who access the portal on the center’s website will find a menu that connects them to various services such as nursing, disability services, financial assistance and nutrition.

In total, there are more than eight categories at the local, state and national levels, but center staff want to remind people that the guide, which can be accessed via computer or mobile phone, is intended to complement the center’s in-person services.

“We are a multi-purpose center and that’s important to remember,” said Emily Ford, a community engagement specialist. “We have a wonderful team of social workers who can point you in the right direction and help you with your individual needs and make sure you’re on an individualized path.”

We do this to take some of the guesswork and stress of the unknown out of the way. All organizations listed on the website have been verified by the Resource Center.

“Oh, I learned something today and it’s great,” said Barb Foster. “New Hanover County is growing so much and people need help and a lot of seniors have come here. We need that kind of service, so New Hanover needs to stick with it.”

Agencies that provide social services and are not on the current list may contact the Senior Center for registration information.
