Johnson HS shortstop named MVP of World Cup Americas Qualifier

You’ve probably heard his name in connection with some of the top baseball talents in the San Antonio area, but Kayson Cunningham broke out internationally this summer, helping the U.S. U-18 baseball team win the Americas World Cup qualifier in Panama.

Cunningham was the shortstop for the U.S. team. Not only did he put in great defensive performances, but he also finished the tournament with a .417 batting average, three doubles and 12 RBIs, earning him the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award.

He was also recognized for being named to the All-Tournament team.

Cunningham will spend his final season at Johnson, where he will try to help the Jaguars return to the state championships like they did last season.

After the school year, he plans to play college baseball at the University of Texas, but that could change as he is expected to be selected in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft.
