Henderson on the list of candidates for the Bednarik Award

NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion senior linebacker Jason Henderson has been named to the Bednarik Award Watch List, the Maxwell Football Club announced Monday. The Bednarik Award is given annually to the most outstanding defensive player in college football.

A two-time All-America honoree, Henderson led the country in tackles per game the last two seasons. He recorded 14.2 tackles per game and finished the year with 170 tackles. He posted an ODU single-season record 19.5 tackles for loss and ranked third in the country with 1.6 tackles for loss per game. In 2022, he led the country with 186 tackles and 15.5 tackles per game.

A native of Dingmans Ferry, Pennsylvania, Henderson is the only FBS All-American returning to college football this season. He is the second-leading active college football player in tackles and is 142 tackles away from the FBS record.

Henderson was selected to the 2023 All-America first team by several media outlets, including Walter Camp and The Sporting News, and was named to the second team by the FWAA, AP, and USA Today. Henderson was selected to the 2022 All-America team, was named to the second team by the FWAA and USA Today, and was named to the third team by the AP.

Henderson and the Monarchs open the 2024 season on Saturday, August 31, in South Carolina.
