This year’s ceremony comes after a period of controversy following last year’s awards ceremony, in which authors RF Kuang, Xiran Jay Zhao and Neil Gaiman were deemed ineligible for their respective categories despite receiving enough nomination votes.

On August 11, Kuang posted photos on Instagram from the Alfies, a private event hosted by George RR Martin for those who were ineligible for last year’s Hugo Awards. Kuang received an “Alfie” for best novel with Babylon (HarperVoyager), which was disqualified for the Hugo Best Novel Award last year.
