“Brave New World” star Tim Blake Nelson has problems with Martin Scorsese’s superhero comments

Tim Blake Nelson played the leader for the first time in 2008 The Incredible Hulkthe second MCU film after Iron-Man was released earlier that same year.

Samuel Stern’s story ended with a hint that he would soon become the leader, but over a decade and a half later, we still don’t know what became of him. Thanks Captain America: Brave New Worldall this will change next year.

“The prospect of not being able to return to the MCU has saddened me deeply,” Nelson told Variety about his absence in a recent interview. “As an actor, all I wanted to do was find out what happened to this guy. 18 years later, I got to do it and I was not disappointed.”

“It was a big challenge and I was wonderfully guided by Julius Onah, an indie director,” he said about the next Captain America Film. “These are real directors who work with real actors and want to give them the opportunity to play unusual characters. Marvel supports that.”

The actor went on to say that despite endless talks about superhero fatigue, no one “Marvel is out.” Nelson added: “Marvel is an unprecedented phenomenon in film history. Kevin Feige and his studio have created dozens of interconnected films that, to use their term, exist in a single cinematic universe. There is no comparable achievement. So no – I don’t think it’s over.”

He would go on to say: Captain America is one of Marvel Studios’ most “grounded” franchises and compares it to Logan (an interesting remark, since Brave new world contains a Red Hulk). “It will be a wonderful film” added Nelson.

One of Marvel Studios’ biggest critics in recent years has, of course, been Martin Scorsese. Nelson mentioned the filmmaker while praising the MCU, making it clear that he doesn’t share the notion that superhero movies aren’t “cinema” at all.

“I couldn’t respect Martin Scorsese more, he’s his own genre, but I don’t agree with him when he mocks Marvel. I think Marvel films are absolutely cinema. They make us kids again. When they’re really good, and they often are, you get lost in them.”

“Are they deep? Are they ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘Miller’s Crossing’, are they ‘Bicycle Thieves’, ‘Schindler’s List’ or Kieślowski? No, but they don’t aspire to be. They are entertainment and there is art in them. That’s my Marvel speech.”

After meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, played by Harrison Ford in his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, Sam finds himself in the middle of an international incident and must uncover the reason behind a nefarious global conspiracy before the real mastermind enrages the entire world.

Captain America: Brave New World with Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Xosha Roquemore, Carl Lumbly, with Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson and Harrison Ford.

The film was directed by Julius Onah and produced by Kevin Feige and Nate Moore. Louis D’Esposito and Charles Newirth serve as executive producers.

Captain America: Brave New World will be released in US theaters on February 14, 2025.
