Car thief escapes from police with 4-year-old son during a chase through three counties

A “necessary” car thief, who has multiple arrest warrants against him, according to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), led police on a chase through three counties while his girlfriend and four-year-old son were in the car.

The police pursuit ended in a south Seattle neighborhood after the suspect ran away on foot, leaving his girlfriend and young son behind.

The chase began around 9:45 a.m. Sunday in Pierce County when an officer determined a Ford F-550 pickup truck had been stolen after receiving calls reporting a man “slumped” behind the wheel of a truck, according to KING 5.

“When dispatch checked the license plate, they determined it was a stolen vehicle out of Bothell,” Sergeant Darren Moss of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department told KING 5. “The suspect chose not to slow down or stop.”

The pursuit began after the driver sped off, striking two vehicles before turning onto Interstate 5 (I-5). He allegedly drove through King County and then through Snohomish County before driving back through King County. The pursuit lasted nearly two hours until the suspect abandoned the stolen vehicle on Renton Avenue South. At one point, the suspect made a U-turn on a median of the highway, avoiding spike barriers laid out by authorities.

When a tire blew out, he jumped out of the vehicle and ran away. His girlfriend and four-year-old son left him behind. According to KIRO 7, his son was able to identify him to police.
