When looking for a place to settle down, safety is of course an important factor. The safer a place is, the higher the demand and property value.
You may be wondering: Where are the safer places in the Garden State? The folks at SmartAsset set out to find the answer to that question.
To find the safest suburbs in America, SmartAsset compared data from 360 places located within 15 to 45 minutes by car from the 100 largest U.S. cities and with at least 5,000 residents, based on the following criteria:
Violent crime rate
The number of violent crimes per 100,000 residents. Data is from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Database for 2022; missing crime data was filled in from NeighborhoodScout.com.

Property crime rate
The number of property crimes per 100,000 residents. Data is from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Database for 2022; missing crime data was supplemented by NeighborhoodScout.com.

Vehicle fatality rate
The number of deaths from traffic accidents per 100,000 inhabitants. Data comes from the 2024 County Health Rankings.

Mortality rate from drug poisoning
The number of deaths from drug poisoning per 100,000 inhabitants. Data comes from the 2024 County Health Rankings.
Medicines or drugs?
Percentage of the population that drinks excessive amounts of alcohol
The percentage of adults who consumed more than four alcoholic drinks (women) or more than five alcoholic drinks (men) on a single occasion over a 30-day period or who are heavy drinkers, consuming an average of more than one alcoholic drink per day (women) or more than two alcoholic drinks per day (men).

New Jersey schools with the most calls to the police
These are the 30 New Jersey schools that made the most reports to police during the 2022-23 school year for reasons including violence, weapons, vandalism, drugs, and harassment or bullying. When applicable, the number of arrests made by police at the schools is also provided. Schools are listed by the number of police calls from least to most. Data comes from the state Department of Education’s annual School Performance Report.
